Freyr - Work in Progress

Hey Everyone,


Another update on my Norse project. This time it is my first God miniature - Freyr.

The model that I am using to represent Freyr on the table top is a 40mm scale Jason (of Argonoughts fame) produced by Spartan Games. I was lucky enough to buy a bunch of these minis from my old local gaming store while they were still in production. Huge monsters excluded, their Jason model is my runaway favourite. With his neat beard, ornate armour and chiselled features I thought he made a fine candidate for a miniature deity.

I left the model mostly 'as is', the only conversions being the two weapon swaps. I drilled though the left hand and added a spear ('borrowed' from one of the skeleton models) and replaced the sword with an antler taken from a GW Bretonnian Helmet. 

I was a little worried that a 40mm miniature would be a little on the small side compared the 'official' God miniatures, but I think that he sizes up well next to his 28mm worshippers. Norse Gods are depicted as being far less detached from the common man compared to their Egyptian and Greek opposites, so I'm quite happy with how he is only a head taller.

Last thing before bed.

Ive had a rotten day so the last thing I thought Id do before settling down to bed was pop up the little progress that I made tonight painting wise.

I have defrosted my two walkers and Gatling gun after the earlier spray varnish fiasco using gloss varnish. Worked well - about 80% of the whiteness is gone but they are now glossy as hell - so I'll have to apply (with a brush!) two or three coats of matt varnish over the top to dull it down.

Painting wise I have finally got around to painting the US War Rocket 'Ajax'.

Better Dead then Red

Just thought Id update with what I painted this evening - Two as yet unnamed commie-crushing robot mech things. They are Battletech Wraith mechs that I had left over. I thought they looked suitably retro-futuristic to use in my fallout inspired American army of the 50/60's.




Ive added a number and Air Force decal to the top of their heads/cowls.


Here they are with the rest of the force so far.

I'll varnish them in the morning and then finish the basing - then these are done and dusted - then onto the War Rocket.

Couple of Khivians

Ive been having a bash at knocking together some models to represent the armed forces of the Khanate of Khiva today. A good friend of mine gave me a nice little heap of left over Egyptians from his own Anglo-Egyptian colonial project, and all I have done is sculpted some big fuzzy hats out of Milliput over the top of their fezzes. 6 down - 60+ to go.

Second Weekly Update.

I’ve done a fair bit this week. I’ve been working more on my Russians, but, by a strange turn of fate I am simultaneously working on a Second World War Norwegian platoon. Oddly, the Norwegian uniform and equipment in 1940 was the same as the Russian uniform and equipment in the 1870’s, so by just adding a machine gun and a tank I have an entirely new force for an entirely new period.

Anyway, this is what I’ve been up to this week.

Next up, I dug around in my garage and found out a few toys. I ended up making this train. It’s supposed to be one of those small narrow-gauge types used in India.

Lastly, Whilst looking around in some dusty boxes I found a few cars and things that I'll paint up and scatter around in my ww2 games.

I made things!

I’ve been rather busy with work and other ‘real world’ nonsense recently, but have finally managed to find the time to do a little post.

I’ve been bashing on with my ill guided 1/2400^th scale naval project recently, and as well as painting up a bunch of models from Tumbling Dice (I’ll post up some picts at some point) I realised that I there were a fair few ships that I couldn’t actually buy models for. I thought to myself, ‘1/2400^th? That’s really diddilly. I recon I could do that.’ So I did.

First up, and for the Americans, the Ironclad Frigate USS New Ironsides

A little more random, a generic box-battery ship. Brazil had a few like this. I really don’t like the model though, and can’t see me using it much.

‘It’s been a while’ and “Anglo-American War – 1/2400 Ironclads – USS Dunderberg”

Hello Everyone.

Sorry for the lack of Posts, I have been busy with some essay writing for the past month or so, so sadly haven’t had the time to get any posts up or really anything Wargaming related finished.

But all that’s soon to change. I expect over the next few weeks to finish my ‘gang’ for the Necromunda/Gorkamorka campaign that I am soon going to be running and to get my VSF Russians looking a little more up together and ship-shape.

First however, A sort of spur of the moment project that I got a little over enthusiastic over the last few days, the 1865 Anglo-American war in 1/2400 scale. I’m doing American Navy and a Friend of mine is taking care of the British and perhaps the French if they want to join in.v

Expect a fair few pictures in the coming week...or next week if the postman is slow.

Because I had to order things, I decided that my first leap ever into 1/2400 scale naval war gaming should also be my first ever scratch-built ship. Because I couldn’t find one anywhere else in the right scale, my version of the USS Dunderberg.

Before you judge, it’s my first go at a scrachbuild and its only 2” long, so this is a super close up. I’m holding judgement if it’s a ‘keeper’ or not until it’s got a nice lick of paint and I’m holding it at arm’s length, or better still watching it on the table blasting apart the Royal Navy.

It’s made of cardstock (because its easier to cut than plasticard and it was within arms reach when I was on the sofa), a paperclip, a piece of copper pipe, some glue, polyfiller, a Wikipedia entry and a calculator.

Donnerkreig – Infantryman’s Protected Conveyance (IPC) – Ideas

I’m rather taken with the idea of giving my Panzer Dragoons some kind of armoured vehicle so that they can rightly go into battle alongside their fellow Land Ironclads (who are finished and pictures will be posted soon).

I’ve been having a think and a Google, and here’s some pictures I found on the eithernet that are of the sort of ‘it could have happened, possibly...perhaps’ style that I like to have in my VSF games, rather than the Steampunk infused Wells that some people enjoy.(These are just pictures I found on the internet, so if they belong to anyone and they don’t want me to use them for any reason, just say)

^ I really like this last one. 

I write this to appeal to the modellers, wargamers and scratch builders of the world. Does anyone know how I can make anything like this myself? Or anywhere that makes kits in the correct scale? Any other ideas on what a Prussian IPC would look like? Any ideas or thoughts at all really?

Tripple-Barrel Nordenfelt Machine Gun

 I converted up a 3 barreled nordenfelt gun out of some sprew, a 15mm scale ACW gun limber, some brass rod and a plastic I-beam gerder.

Im not sure about it, I'll make my mind up once theres paint on it. What do you all think?

In the works: Prussian Panzer Dragoons

I don’t normally like to put out images of half finished models, but I thought these were worth showing without a coat of paint on them.

Finally ready for painting my Prussian ‘Panzer-Dragoons’. They are part of an elite mechanised force, transported into battle on the back of an armoured machine. With no need for lengthy forced marches, they can take liberties with burdening themselves with bullet-resistant Krupp breastplates and enclosing themselves in gas-masks and leather bodysuits. Armed with leaver action rifles, bayonets and sharp Prussian discipline, combined with avid defence from musketry and poison attack, they pose a great threat on the field of battle.

The models themselves are ‘Shock Trooper’ bodies (Wargames Factory), with added gasmasked Pickelhelms (from West Wind Poductions), then with rifles and arms from British Zulu war troops (Wargames Factory again). Easy conversions really. The green-stuffing was then done on a whim by Elton Walters, the owner of my local gaming shop (Westgate Games, Canterbury).
